Analysis of benzoic acid in the products of electronic cigarettes

Benzoic acid is an organic acid used for foods or in pharmaceutical products as antimicrobial preservative. It prevents the proliferation of germs responsible for intoxication. This acid is naturally present in dairy products, but is also found in the manufacture of solvent for varnish, paints, inks or dyes.
In e-liquids, benzoic acid can enter the composition of the nicotine salt-based products.

Why analyse benzoic acid in e-liquids?

The ingésciences laboratory has developed an analytical method by UHPLC-UV for checking the concentration of benzoic acid present in e-liquids as well as their emissions.

We assess the concentration of benzoic acid in the product at the start, at the end, and also in its manufacturing process. We also aim to verify the compliance of the labelling of the finished product. It is an essential analysis, offered by ingésciences to ensure the safety of the consumer.

This service enables the manufacturers of e-liquids to ensure the quality of their products. It limits the risks capable of appearing at the different steps of the manufacturing process going from development to production. Finally, this analysis ensures stability of the product over time.

Moreover, since 2016 the manufacturers of e-liquids must declare on a European notification platform the composition of all products containing nicotine (application of the TPD, European directive on tobacco products). For this, all components having a concentration greater than 0.1% must be known and quantified. So, it is necessary to know the concentration of benzoic acid present in nicotine salt-based products in order to be able to make this declaration.
